Tye Koolis finishes 2nd at the Rip Curl Gromsearch event

After 4 epic days of competing Tye was the last local left standing come finals time. In fun peaky 3ft waves took on the best of the best in the blue ribbon U/16 Boys final. Harry Phillips from the South coast executed a barrage of backside snaps to open up an early lead locking in an impressive 15.23 two-wave heat total. But Tye didn’t let up throwing everything at him right to the end. Needing an 8.81 with a few minutes to go Tye put it all on the line but could only manage a 7.5 and finishing in 2nd place. A great result for the young kid and for his outstanding surfing through the event was also awarded the most outstanding male competitor of the event. Yeah Tye

After a 9th at Jan Juc a few weeks ago Tye is sitting 4th on the ratings and looks a solid chance of nabbing one of the 10 final spots available in the National Gromsearch Final at Woonoona in Jan 2018.

U16 Boys
1 – Harry Phillips – 15.23
2 – Tye Koolis – 14.2
3 – Finn Hill – 12.66
4 – Ben Duncan – 11.24

Congrats to all other boys that competed in the event.

Update – Comp Calendar for the rest of 2017

Howdy folks

In last weeks monthly newsletter we announced a date change for the Sept 16 comp to 14 October. This move was made because of the impact the Junior Kirra Teams event (which will be run over the same weekend) will have on the event. Unfortunately the council has this week advised that the beach had already been booked by the Maroubra Bodyboarders who needed to rearrange their event to make way for the Rip Curl Gromsearch.

So after some discussion the committee have agreed to run comp 6 on the 16 Sept as per the original calendar. The kids competing + caretakers who fly to Qld as part of the Maroubra United team will be compensated by way of having an average score added to their overall points tally. There will be a large number of key personnel missing so for those of you who are around on that weekend please ensure you to get down early to help set up, judge a few heats through the day and help out where you can.

So the deal for the rest of the year is

16 Sept – Pointscore – Comp 6 @ Maroubra

21 Oct – Sands Paul Baxter Shield @ Maroubra                                                           (Specialty Event which is open to all local surfers. No points allocated to individual surfers for this event)

4 Nov – Pointscore – Comp 7 @ Bendalong

Fri 18 Nov – Presentation Night @ Juniors at Malabar

Congrats & Good Luck Jackson

Congratulations to young ripper Jackson Giles for his 2nd place finish in the recent Chain Resources Men’s Pro Junior in NZ. He finished runner up to WA charger Jacob Wilcox. Along the way Jacko took out some big scalps including Jordan Lawler, Joe Van Dijk and Jackson Barker. This result pushed Jackson into 6th place in the overall ASP Australasian rankings. A huge result for his 1st year in the Pro Juniors.

Jackson’s next mission will be to represent Australia and take on the best U/16 surfers from around the globe in the prestigious Rip Curl International GromSearch Final. The event will be held at one of the best waves in the world, the famous Lakey Peak in Sumbawa, Indonesia. Good Luck champ. Charge hard and bring that trophy home.
