The Baxter Shield is back!

The 2017 Sands Hotel Paul ‘Baxter Shield’ will be held on Saturday October 21 at Maroubra Beach. After having a year off we have moved the Baxter Shield to the warmer month of October in 2017 with a new revitalised format!

This contest is an open pre-paid surfing event with limited amount of surfing spots available that go on a ‘first in, first served’ basis. (Keep in mind that there is only a maximum of 64 competing surfers on the day and we currently have well over 150 members at Southend – so get in early to guarantee your spot. You can register simply by clicking on the link http://southendboardriders.com.au/purchase/paul-baxter-shield/2017-baxter-shield-entry/

For those that aren’t familiar with the event, the annual tag team surfing competition is in honour of colourful Maroubra local Paul ‘The Animal’ Baxter who died in 1984 in the seas off Ballina. This special surfing event is not a Southend Boardriderd Point score competition and is open all Maroubra Surfers. The focus on the day is really simple; have as much fun as possible to honour the late Paul Baxter.

Competing surfers are allocated into teams.  All members of the winning team have their names etched into local surfing history, placed on the perpetual trophy (a surfboard) on permanent display at the Sands Hotel Maroubra. Normal contest surfing is very much an individually focused discipline whereas surfing for a team involves different strategies and skills but more importantly is just a heap of fun.

Entry is open to anyone aged 14 and over and is still a bargain at only $20 thanks to the help of our event sponsor ‘The Sands Hotel Maroubra’ and the hard work of volunteers. Entry includes breakfast, lunch, drinks, live entertainment great prizes, special guests and most importantly the chance to have your name forever etched in surfing history.

Stay tuned as we have a ton of surprises this year. We will keep updating information on the website and also the Facebook and twitter accounts.
