Congrats to the new U/18 NSW State Champion Max McGuigan.
After a hard-fought battle against in-form Cronulla surfer Jay Brown, McGuigan exploded in the later stages of the heat, posting two above-average scores to finish with an impressive two-wave heat total of 15.34 and take the top spot.
“It feels unreal — I have been chasing that title for a long time, but I finally got there,” McGuigan, said. “It was a pretty tough event given that there were a lot of really good surfers out there … everyone surfed really well but I just stuck to what I knew and in the end I came out on top.
“There is a little bit of rivalry with Jay but we’re really good mates and get along unreal, he was pretty happy for me.”
Max will now lead the NSW team in the Aussie Titles at Culburra in Nov and in this win gives him a wildcard into the 2018 Australian Open of Surfing at Manly in February 2018
What a hectic week weather wise and I hope that you all came through it unscathed. You go back one week and we were blessed with awesome weather for comp 2. . Ok the waves might have been on the smallish side but there were still plenty of rippable ones coming through. When we were setting up at 6.30 I was calling that we cancel the day due to lack of waves but our fearless leader Matt Lawson stuck to his guns said the waves will improve as the tide runs out. And in the end he made the call (the right call too) to run the event.
The Cadet and Junior Boys kicked things off and these kids turned it on. Some great surfing throughout all the early heats and by now many of you would of seen the photos on social media showing these kids ripping. The Open A’s and GM entered the fray mid morning as the tide started running out and these guys really put on a show. All the Opens including Joey M and Monty T were ripping and in his first comp @Wayneeatsfruit (Wayne O’Neil) found some great waves in their heats.
With so many people still away on holidays we made the call to run the Micro Girls and Boys and the cadet girls in the main area. Obviously a very big thrill for these youngsters as they are very often forced to surf down the beach a little in front of parents and officials. But now they were surfing in front of the whole club and these kids were ripping. There is nothing better than seeing the thrill on these kids faces after they get a bunch of good waves with their mates. Congrats to Mia Johnston for taking her 1st win this year in the Micro Girls Division and to young Ed Steggall who took out the Micro Boys in his 1st ever comp at Southend. The Cadets girls got some great waves in their final and it was Shira Arakkawa who took out the win in a very competitive final over Baylei McGuigan.
Congrats to young Max McGuigan who finishing equal 9th at the Mick Fanning RipCurl Gromsearch Finals at North Narrabeen earlier in the week. His round 2 heat was a high scoring heat and Max missed out on getting through to the quarters by 0.7 of a point.
This week Max joins our boys Monty Tait and Jackson Giles in the WSL Carve Pro Junior at Maroubra Beach. Good luck to Max, Monty Jackson and the rest of the Southend boys competing this weekend.
Tomorrow 12 Jan 2015, Max will be taking on the best U/14 surfers from Oz in the 2015 Mick Fanning Rip Curl GromSearch National final at North Narrabeen. The new look National final will run over 3 days and allow all GromSearch divisions to vie for the title with the top 10 rated surfers in the Boys 16 and under (16’s), 14’s and 12’s divisions, as well as the Girls 16’s division all qualifying for the National final, along with 2 wildcards in each.
The Champions of the 14’s division will be invited to an elite training camp run by Mick Fanning in early February meanwhile the U/16 division Champions will then go on to represent Australia at the International Rip Curl GromSearch final to be held in 2015 as Jackson Giles did in 2014 at the famous Lakey Peak in Sumbawa Indonesia.
