Baxter 2017

Rocking up to the beach early on Saturday morning you would of thought it was middle of winter. A fresh southerly was blowing, it was cloudy and cool but at least we had waves. There was a fun 3ft swell running and we took over the nice little A-Frame in front of Southend Surf Club.

We introduced a stack of changes this year so no one really knew what to expect. Moving the event from winter to spring, change in format, moving from twinnies and single fins to the Softlite and Mullet boards and passing of the baton to younger captains.

Event 6 wrap

A super clean 2-3 ft SE swell had us setting up on a pretty epic A Frame. Winds turned offshore at about 8am and stayed that way all day. With pumping waves on offer everyone came along with their A-Game. Plenty of epic heats with some of the highest heat scores we’ve seen in years. Standouts on the day included Monty Tait fresh back from Europe, Gully Thomas, Kyle O’Sullivan, Seamus Connon, Jackson Dennett, Luana Rubbo, Baylei McGuigan and Shira Arakawa. The Micros Groms surfed on the bank in front of the skate park and geez they were ripping too.

Comp 5 – Wild Times

First light saw the beginning of a new south swell hitting northend.  Winds were light SW and the swell was 5-6 ft and building with each set that came through. We set up in front of Southend surf club where it was a few feet smaller and more importantly a little more protected from the winds. By mid morning the waves were 5ft and 8 out of 10 waves were doing their best impersonation of Waimea shorey. Some deadly closeouts. But amongst the close out there were still some sick ones. The guys in A Grade really lit it up as did the Junior Boys and Open Women.
