Comp 6 write up

After a few comps being cancelled due to poor surf Huey finally gave all Southend surfers a sample of what spring has in store. Sun shining fun 3 ft waves but a very cool winds and water.

The groms tore up the early session and with no Jackson or Monty the rest of the junior and cadet crew ripped it up. Early standouts included Max McGuiggan, Tye Koolis & Chris Riley & Jack Pacey. The cadets really stepped it up in the semis with Max McGuiggan, Luke Johnson, Jack Pacey and Max Bellaiche coming together in what was the tightest final ever. In the end 0.1 points separated 1st to 3rd. Max McGuiggan overcame a slow start to take out the event with some great backhand surfing. Jack P came in 2nd beating Max B on count back.

The cadet girls also surfed in the main area and it was a tight final which was in the balance right up to the final siren. All 5 girls surfed well but in the end it was Emma McGuiggan taking the title with Shanelle and Charlotte not too far behind in 2nd and 3rd.

The micros also had great fun on the right and left further down the beach. Will Emanuelle took out the hotly contested Micro Boys final over Lucas Bersot and Eli A’Bell. In the Micro girls Tegan Koolis won the Micro Girls Final over Baylei McGuiggan and Mia Johnson. Great surfing by all the little groms and congrats to the finalists and comp winners Will and Tegan.

Jordan Gilbert took out his event of the year in B Grade as did Lisa Farrugia in the Open women’s division who beat good friend Michelle Schembri by 0.8 of a point. A great rivalry has formed between these 2 and both surfers are really pushing their surfing. In the GM division it was Mark Rohr who took out his 1st event win ever beating Laurie Miller, Lloyd and Frog in the straight out final.

So it came down to the Opens A grade final. Young guns Monty & Karl Melo vs. old hands Platts & Troy Futcher. Platts took the early lead but as the time ticked by Karl and Monty got into the groove and ripped the waves apart with a mix of aggressive power surfing and new skool trick . Monty took the final by a point followed by Karl and Platts 3rd and Troy in 4th.

Congrats again to all winners. Thanks to our comp sponsor Eastern Tiling. The food and drink was well received by the competitors and the parents.
