Finally after a series of cancelled comps Huey delivered a nice clean 2 to 3 ft E/SE swell for Comp 6 of the 2013 season.
The Cadet boys hit the water first and ripped the waves apart. Max McGuigan, Tye Koolis and Zac Michaels were standouts in Round 1. Tye Koolis, Koda & Zane Killorn and Tyler Johnson battled it out in the final. Tye didn’t give the other boys a chance in the final. His finals experience was there for all to see as he patiently waited and picked off the best waves of each sets. The other boys also got some good one but were not able to find the ones where they could link 2 or 3 turns which was the difference. Well done to the 3 young fellas but I need to stop and praise young Koda for his effort on the weekend. This little grom is still technically a Micro but wanting to challenge himself he is competed up in the Cadets. He surprised everyone when he made it through to the final and then came in 2nd. Keep your eyes on this little frothing grommet.
The A Grade Men soon followed and it was Joey Michael, Tyson McIntosh, Nick Kennedy and Monty Tait who stood out. Monty and Nick had a sick heat going wave for wave. In the end Nick took out the heat relegating the State champ to 2nd. Some of the younger guys that have been pushed up a grade Oscar Elfman, Luke Johnson and Cory Barron enjoyed the conditions with Oscar and Luke making the semis and Cory making the Final. He joined by Nick, Monty, Joey, Jordan Gilbert and Chris Riley in an epic 20 minute final. I don’t know how the judges kept up. So many waves surfed. Nick and Monty started the heat strongly with Joey also throwing some big turn to keep him in the picture. But midway through the heat Monty hit the after burners and left the others in his wake. His silky smooth backhand attack was something to see. 2 waves in 2 minutes and it was game over. As I sit here typing this comp summary I just got the message to say he won the Cronulla GromSearch Event. Congrats Monty.
The girls in the Opens Women’s division surfed really well. The wind really picked up during the heats (howling NW) which made it tough to get in the right spot. Kaity Duffus and Brooke Emerson stood out in the semis. The final was hard fought. There were drop ins, paddle battles and some excellent surfing. In the end Lisa Farrugia just took the final out beating Brooke Emerson and Michelle Schembri by 0.5 of a point. Congrats Lisa.
Rich Cass and Brad Koolis took out the B Grade and GM’s respectively and Will Emanuele, Mia Johnston (Micros) and Charlotte Wilson (Cadets Girls) dominated their respective divisions with strong showings. These kids have been the form surfers this year and this victory was important as they chase the 2013 titles.

A big thanks to everyone that helped out at this comp. Man of the Match was Craig Lawrence (who helped out more in this comp than his brother has in 3 years) judged 20 out of 26 heats. Thanks to George, Karo and Rich Cz for cooking up a feast for us all to enjoy and Kate Cass for help with running the Micros.
Well that was our last comp at Maroubra for 2013. Our last club comp for the 2013 season is on at Pacific Palms Forster on the 19/10. Keep an eye on the web and Facebook for more details on accom and the event in coming days.
