Comp 3 wrap + updated Jeep Leader Board

A cold wet June morning didn’t keep people away for our 3 event of 2016. When the sun peaked its head over the horizon there were some fun 3-4ft waves and we staked claim to the largest comp area ever seen for a boardriders comp on the beach. We have 2 banks from the Beachies office to Northend surf club.

People quickly forgot about the weather when the BBQ got cranked and Karo and the boys started churning thru out the bacon and egg rolls. Just as the comp got underway the rain moved off and there was little to no wind. Epic conditions really and everyone must have been watching the cams because the crowd in the water went from 20-40 to 300 in 20 min. There was some great surfing in the early heats by the usual suspects. Joey, max in the Opens, Jason O, Tye, Gully and Zac Michael in Juniors, Koda, Kyle O, Josh Keary in the Cadets all had great Round 1 heats score to match their performance. As the day progressed the wind came up from the South but it was still light and didn’t affect things too much. The finals were epic.

Cadets Boys Final -things were really tight. Every surfer had an opportunity to take the win. Koda was ahead and looked to have control of the final but Lucas B came home with a flurry and nabbed a 5.50 to seal his first Cadet victory. Koda stayed in 2nd, Kyle O 3rd, young Mateus  Bersot (stepping up a division yeah Mateus), Josh K 5th and Flynn 6th.

Junior Boys Final –  Another one where it was anybody’s game. Every surfer held the lead at some stage and in the end Tye Koolis slipped into the inside away from the pack and snuck a few to steal the lead off Zac. That is the way it stayed. Tye 1st Zac 2nd with Gully, Paolo, Zane and Jason rounding out the other places.

A Grade – Max and Monty, NK and Joey slugged it out in an epic 20 min battle. Max ripped apart 2 sick ones early. He was on point and his waves had it all speed power flow big turns in critical sections. That meant the 3 others were playing catch up. Monty had one chance right at the end to seal it but the wave shut down and it was game over. NK came home strong but just not enough to unseat young Max.

Open Women – Emma McGuigan made it 3 in a ro. Her surfing was sharp and her wave selection was excellent. She had her competitors in combo land for most of the heat and finished the heat on 11/20. The battle for 2nd between Georgia and Kirra was epic. Kirra ended up with an interferences call which meant  her 2nd score was halved. She couldn’t recover and Georgia too 2nd, Kirra 3rd, Gretel 4th and Charlotte 5th. UFC 201 this coming Saturday….

B Grade – Jordan made in 2 in a row after convincingly taking out the B grade event over Johnny, Karo and Hickey. Jordan seemed to be in sync with the ocean and was in the right spot at the right time all the time. Unfortunately not the same story for the others. Johnny continued his charge up the leader board with another 2nd place. Karo finished 3rd Hick 4th.

GM – 3 in a row for Luiz. The little Brazilian ran away with it in the last 6-7 min getting some nice long lefts that were pumping through the bank over near Northend surf club. Pineapple and Tom were close but not close enough finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Undercard to main event UFC 201 this Saturday

Cadet Girls – young Baylei McGuigan surfed fantastically to take out another comp. She didn’t have it all her own way with Axelle and Sara nipping at her heals the whole time. Hats off to all the girls in this division. They are surfing brilliantly and every heat is just so close. Well done to you all.

The micro boys and girls had an epic time surfing the reforms on the inside of the northend surf club bank. In the Girls it was Ally Hickman took out the Micro Girls event again with Ava Ferris 2nd, Keana O’Neill 3rd and Kobi O’Sullivan 4th. In the boys young jack Wregg overcame strong opposition to win his 1st event. Koby Lawson finished 2nd, Dylan O’Rourke 3rd and Jesse O’Neill was 4th. Congrat to all the young groms. Keep charging.

Leader Board after event 3

Performance of the day went to young Gully Thomas. His 13 /20 (a tad underscored in my opinion) in that round 1 heat was epic to watch. The kids oozes class and you can tell he is just loving his surfing at the moment. Well done mate and keep ripping.

Thanks to all the people that helped throughout the day. The judges, the people who helped set up pack up, cleaned up, cooked BBW. Disco Stu Donnelly for his sunset DJ session.
