Comp 3 rundown

Sydney served up a grey, foggy Saturday morning for comp 3. The crew had a hard time telling exactly what the conditions were like with through the fog but once it lifted we had no hesitation in taking the banks up at middle. Clean 2-3 ft peaks on offer from the east had the competitors frothing to get out there.

The Cadets hit it early followed by the Junior Boys. Both divisions ripped it up with standout performances from Liam Rayner, Kel Gollan, Max McGuigan, Nick Kennedy and Gulliver Thomas in the juniors and Jason O’Rouke, Stevie Ray, Zac Michael and Koda Killorn in the cadets.

In the cadets Zac Michael and Luke Michaels had great semi-finals heats to make the final. In that semi Zac scored 12.36, which was the highest heat score of all division on the day. In the final Zac found the right waves and won his 1st comp of the year. Tye Koolis was close behind in 2nd and Comp 1 & 2 champ Jason O’Rouke in 3rd.

In the Junior Final boys it was Max Mcguigan taking the win over Nick Kennedy, Cory Barron and Oscar Elfman. Special mention and congrats to Emma McGuigan who competed with the boys in this round. She won her 1st round heat and came 4th in the semi narrowly missing a place in the final.

The A Grade Men put on a great show in Round 1 with Daniel Semo, Max McGuigan, Karl and Jay Barron taking out their heats. The Semi Finals were also very tight with Jackson Giles, Jackson Barron, Karl Richards, Joey Michael, Epic Steph and Nick Kennedy making it through to the Final. And boy was it a cracker. With the light fading fast Jackson Giles turned it on and took out the final. But he didn’t have it all his own way. Jackson Barron 2nd Joey 3rd Epic Steph 4th made sure he had to fight for it. In taking out the Final Jackson won a trip away to the snow with OzSnow in late August. Thanks to the Southend old boys for donating the prize.

Congrats to Emma Mcguigan for talking the Open Womens. Brooke Emerson 2nd and Lisa Farrugia in 3rd. Congrats to Greg ‘Critta’ Watling for taking the GM’s with Con Parris coming in a very close 2nd. Those 2 guys are really pushing each other and it makes great watching every time they come up against each other.

The micros hit the Southend bowl for their comp and they really put on a show. The level of surfing in that division is crazy. It’s great to watch. In the very competitive Micro Boys division every heat 1st to 6th was decided by a few points. The final was outstanding with Grayson Hinrichs, Koda Killorn and Angus Jones going blow for blow. Towards the end of the heat Grayson pulled a 360 reverse out of his bag of tricks to clinch the final. The older boys who were down there helping out were calling it the move of the year. In the Micro girls Kyrah Lawson overcame a strong finish from Zoe Cass and Mia Johnston to win the Final. Well done Kyrah. In the Cadet Girls it was Kirra Lowlett overcoming good friend Charlotte Wilson by 0.2 points with Shauna Lee in 3rd. Congrats to Kirra taking out her 2nd comp win this year.

Unfortuantely and much to our disappointment we were unable to run the B Grade final due to fading light. 144 competitors / 45 heats cannot be squeezed into a 9 hours of day. So we will kick comp 4 off with the B Grade Final starting at 7.15am. Rich Cass, Mick Strattos, Karo and Rod Feher will contest that final.

Thanks to our comp sponsors SurfWorld Surf Shop Bondi for the vouchers, Mellick Wealth Management Pty Ltd whose sponsorship allowed us to buy prizes and goodies for the Micros and Cadet’s Divisions. Siq Wax and The Bay Bakehouse for the wax and the vouchers. Well done to all winners and thank you to all the competitors for putting on the show for everyone. Thanks Karl and Joey for the music and thanks to all those judged, help set up and pack up, the BBQ boys for feeding us all through the day.
