The Brien Holden Vision Institute Club Pointscore #1 kicked the comp season off last Saturday (March 24). The forecast conditions were pretty much spot on and we were greeted with solid overhead waves and good winds for the first comp of the year. There was definitely plenty of action both in and out of the water throughout the day with plenty of snapped boards and a few shenanigans on the sand throughout the day also.
Randwick Council deemed that the beach was not suitable for swimming and therefore needed to close the beach. Unfortunately this meant that the Micro Boys/Girls divisions needed to be cancelled for the day due to the unsafe conditions!……We know the young grom’s are always very disappointed when this happens but unfortunately it is beyond our control and safety needs to be the first priority. Competition will not go ahead for Micros divisions if the beach is closed by Council. After completion of the mandatory risk assessment the Cadet Girls and the Open Women divisions were put on hold whist conditions were evaluated throughout the morning. Unfortunately these divisions were eventually called off also.
Whilst it is disappointing for the young groms, the larger clean conditions were very welcomed for the older competitors and it was awesome to able to get A Grade in the water first up in some great conditions! Masters, Juniors and B Grade divisions relished in the conditions with a massive shout going to the Cadets competitors stepping up in the larger conditions. Many of these kids have just moved up from the micros this year and were having a big dig out in the tougher conditions.
The story of the day has to be about our youngest Open Men’s (A Grade) competitor Koda Killorn taking out the event in the Clubs main division!………Koda who at only a few days shy of his 14th birthday won the event, surfing well beyond his years taking out the Comp #1 for the year. Koda is now the Clubs youngest ever A Grade winner edging out Jason Platt’s record that has stood since way back in 1987! Well done buddy!
